BANANARAMA-VENUS

The song is completely dominant by feminine power as this shown by the close ups of female actress and their pleasurable body. The lyrics and visuals are connected to each other 'I'm your Venus and your desire' reflects beautiful actress and their desirable body. The customs wore by actress are powerful which makes them superior. For instance the Dracula custom with the wings symbolises her power upon men. The moment she flings her wings we see men emerging from it this shows men are her servants and she is one who is looking after them.

Guns N' Roses - Sweet Child O' Mine

The song demonstrates the Rock and Roll generation of 1980s. The relationship between the music and visuals are related as the visuals is rough and tough like the song. The mise-en-scene and background lighting are dark and heavy which shows the theme of heavy metallic music. The song also have lots of close up of the main artist to show his facial expression and body language. The main artist is more prioritised than his band members to show the main artist is more popular with the audience and is pleasurable to desire for.

Queen-I want to break free

The song narrates the story of a group of men wanting to live their lives as being women. The song implies Goodwin's theories in a significant ways. For instance, The music video shows a relationship between lyrics and visuals. The background of crowded people in dark symbolises artist's desire of becoming free. The music video also have close ups of main artist to show from his point of view. The mise-en-scene and make ups develop the overall theme of the feminine power in the music video as how artists are possessed with feminine clothes and products. The music video provides symbolism and responses that is what some 1980s men desire to be.

Target Audience

The target audience for our music video is teenagers and young adults, in particular girls. We think that they will be able to empathise more with the actress in our video and possibly relate with her. On the poster we have put pictures of things that our target audience would like e.g the perfume. We have also put these things on to represent the sweetness of the girl in our music video. Like Cheryl Cole in the poster our actress is innocent and pretty but as the time passes she becomes more optimistic and aggressive as she is betrayed and fooled by her own fate.

Strengths-

  • The actor in the video is good at playing the guitar so it is believable that he is playing the song
  • The lip sincing is very good which makes it look like he is really singing
  • I like the range of shots used throughout the video such as the high angles and the close ups as it makes it more interesting rather than just him standing there singing
  • i  like the way he sings it to the audience, it makes the song seem more meaningful
Weaknesses
  • They could have used a better range of locations or if they wanted to stay at the same one throughout they could have found a more interesting location
  • they havnt used any effects throughout the video which made it quite boring

Hear you can see the original single cover for Lil Waynes song 'How To Love'. i like it because i think the dark colours and the way Lil Wayne is standing reflects the saddness of the song.

On the front cover of our digipack i have ideas of having a close up shot of our main actress at the train station with a train going past in the background. This could represent her letting go of the past and looking foward to the future.

Similar to this picture i have found but the girl wouldnt be smiling to show the seriousness of the story and she wouldnt be looking directly to the camera. i would also like to get a train going past at the same time.

Another Idea i have had is having a long shot of the girl in the field walking. It would be taken from far away to make her look small in the big wide space. This would reflect her lonleyness and vunrabilty in the music video. Here is an example of how i would want it to look like-

I really like the effects used in this picture as i think it sets the mood well.

Examples of some web pages

Music websites have become one of the most significant tools of this generation as people are influenced by downloading their all time favorite songs from the websites. Another important point is because people show interests on their favorite artist's current news affair. Most of the music web pages are designed by fans to persuade other people to join the websites and support the artist.
Web pages that I was inspire by:

This music web page is designed for Sarah Solovay's fans. The design of web page is very professional as everything is place neatly. The website also have an access to Youtube, Twitter and Itunes the three biggest area to listen to her music and comment on it. The albums below persuades her fans to buy them

Compare to Sarah's web page this is very different as this web page is aimed at teenagers. The web page is very stylist and funky, aimed more on teenagers who loves rock music. I was inspire by the picture of a man playing the instrument in the background- it looks very realistic!

Similar to Sarah's web page this web is designed to attract Akon's fans. This web page is more aimed on people who adores R&b songs. Similar to Sarah's web page it has an access to Twitter and Facebook.

Setting and Location for our Music video

This location is going be used in the beginning of the music video while the girl walks through open field listening to her Ipod. We decided to use this type of location to present the character is isolated by the society. The plainness of open field is a symbolism of her feeling emptiness and dissatisfied with her life. In this scene the audience will see through the view point of a girl.

We have chose cafe to show the conversation between the girl and a boy we chose college for this scene but later on we changed the college scene into cafe- that's where the most of the scene of boy and a girl is going to be shot.

The setting of 'Abbey Garden' is used when the girl is shown with her boyfriend. It can be also used for girl's flashbacks .We chose this setting to reflect the relation the girl have with her boyfriend .The setting is perfect in mid winter as this can show girl's insecure feelings.

Train Station
This location is one of the most significant location in our music video.

It is mostly to be seen in final scene to show the girl's isolation and her losing the last chance with the boy.

Update!

We are currently working on our story board and deciding what we will be filming for our music video. We have also discussed the sort of actors we want and who we could ask, locations and costumes. We seem to be on track at the moment and can hopefully start filming soon :)

How to Love by Shameik Moore

The video provides good skill of editing that might be useful in our music video.

1. The video shows variety of editing skills the best one I prefer was the split screening of two persons speaking in the phone.
2. Slow motion of dissolving used in the video is another good example that we can imply in our video.
3. Framing technique used is something unusual but it some how shows the meaning.

Cover by Adam Stanton

This Video is a good example to support our music video as it has some wonderful ideas for instance, the camera shots are brilliant to show the girl's natural beauty and her innocence.
I was hugely inspired by the girl in the video as she is a similar kind of character we would like to have in our music video. For instance, the character in the video is blonde, innocent and she is shown as harmless by the cruel world. But as the camera zooms we can see her other side .The side which is been damaged and she is struggling to find the way out.The other best thing is that the story is told in the girl's point of view.

Vague idea of story line behind our music video

How to Love by Lil Wayne

Young Boy about 17-18 years old

  • Not that popular but very intelligent and active.

  • From middle Class

  • Is deeply and madly in love with the girl who sit next to him in Drama lesson.

Young Girl about 18 years old

  • About 5ft 4 - very attractive with blonde hair

  • Pretends she is popular and acts too cocky in college

  • At home she is terrible abuse by her father

Extra information

  • When the girl realize the love for the boy it is too late as the boy moves on with his life.

  • The audiences are shown through the girl's point of view as at the end she is the one who suffers by not knowing how to love rather than the boy or her father.

Our Music Survey shows flexibility of everything but among all female singers are the strongest. As there is the high percentage of audiences listening to R&B singer like Chris Brown. We decided to do Lil Wayne- How To Love but before coming to final decision we did agreed to do Chris Brown -Beautiful People but unfortunately there was not enough sources we needed in the music video for exmaple we did not have props we needed and having less people  were our weakest point.

MediaProductions- Previous Wrok

Media productions: Finished Peice
Strength points
  • Camera shots are very effective as it has created more than one meaning.
  • Artist's lip synching is accurate and fluent which perfectly blends with the song.
  • Instruments are used correctly and effectively.
Weakness points
  • The weather was a huge disappointment as it did not suited with the song as the song should have needed more cheerful surrounding and sunny weather.
  • Customs were very appealing as again it did not suited with the song.
  • Instead of long shots and establishment shots there should have been more close ups and mid shots for instance, there should have more close ups and mid shots of a girl, after all the song is about her.

Previous Student Work

The Cave by Golden Tongue

Strength:
Have an effective camera shots which symbolises girl's loneliness.
The singer has an excellent lip syncing and plays guitar well.
Location was the most eye capturing as the woods and plain fields symbolised girl's isolation and it also reflect her sad mood.
Editing was just mind blowing. It was interesting, creative and clever.

Weakness:
More Close ups and proper costumes would have made the music video more popular and likeable.

Rap Genius

I was recommend by a friend to use the website 'Rap Genius' to get a deeper meaning into the lyrics from the song we are doing, lil wayne 'How To Love'. I found the website really useful as we can look deeper into the meaning of the song which will help us when making our music video!

'Love The Way You Lie' Music Video

The Music Video Of 'Love The Way You Lie' by Eminem and Rihanna shows the highs and lows of a violent relationship. It is set in an old american house where it shows big fights in one shot and then the loving side to their relationship in the next shot. I think it makes the video seem really realistic because they are showing the different sides to relationships. When Eminem and Rihanna are in the shot they are standing in front of the same house which is then burning down. This gives the song a very dramatic feel. The Lighting that is used is very dark and dull which shows that it is not a happy song and reflects the characters in the videos moods. Close ups of Rihanna's face when singing is used to show the emotion she is reflecting through the song.

One Shot music Video by Christina Aguilera

A 'One shot' is any music video which consists of action, continuous in time and space. The shot is also from the perspective of a single camera.

Analysing the video.....
  • Extreme close up her facial expression gives people hope and makes them believe there is nothing impossible in life.
  • The black and white lighting reflects her emotions and blends with the song itself.
  • Her pale white dress reflects she is innocent woman but it can be seen as her image of wearing less clothing is suggesting she is vulnerable woman and a victim.
  • Crane shots in the video shows she is desperate for someone to hear her voice. Crane shots also makes the video personal and special which is directly address to the audiences.
  • The shot of her in white rectangle shape makes her stand out against the black/grey street- could be showing the contrast between bad and good attitude of human nature.
Things I like about the video.....Bold
  1. The lyrics which is personal and very inspiring.
  2. The performance of Christina which is directly address to the audiences.

Chris Brown- Beautiful People

The video is a concept based video. It does not contain the story or any live performance by the artist. The song is heavily based on how wonderful friends the artist has. Even the title 'Beautiful People' symbolises how beautiful his friends and family are. The song has more than one meaning as it can be seen that the song and video have different meanings. The song is all about how there are beautiful people in the world where as the video is all about the artist's friends and how important they are in his life.

Things I liked....
  • Camera work- how the shots shape the meaning of the song. For instance, the long shots of Chris Brown performing a live.
  • The special effect it used to symbolise the meaning for instance, the shot of a studio and the people in it is to symbolise their power and to inform the audiences that's where they hang around.
  • The artist it self as he is considered to be the most important in the video because lot of shots are seen through his point of the view.
How successful was the song....
  • Internationally the 'Beautiful People' reached the top ten in four countries.
  • Received lots of positive reviews from critics.
What I was inspire by....
  • The bold fonts in yellow - It was really cool and unique.
  • The song's lyrics which is beautiful itself.
  • Other artists!

She Loves You(Live performance by The Beatles)

The performance video of 'The Beatles' have all those elements that is needed:

  1. Most of their fans are girls this is clearly shown in video.

  2. Even though the stage is plain and less attractive the costumes wore by the band makes the performance stands out.

  3. The performance shows special bond between the band members.

  4. The band members are shown well behaved and dressed smartly which suggests they are professional.

  5. The direct address towards the audiences makes the audiences feel the band is singing just for them. Direct address is personally and emotionally involved in this video.

Things I like about this video

  • The singing- as in this video the artists are shown more focus on actually singing than focusing in the camera.

  • The settings of the performance- showing how the band completely dominant the entire place.

  • Mise-en-scene of the performance is the best!

How successful was the video?

  • It was number 1 twice in England 1963.

  • Still in the UK this song is the biggest selling single of the Beatles.

  • The song was not that popular in USA.

Analysing the music video

Glamorous narrative/thematic song by Fergie!!!

The song have a story of how an artist saying how luxury her life is.Overall the meaning of the song illustrates that no matter how famous she is. She is still the same girl that she used to be before she was famous. The song also suggests that fame will never change her and who she is.

The vedio is considered as a narrative type as Fergie includes a story of how her life changed from being normal girl to a super star. The song have a repetitive theme of luxury living which suggests with a right dream and attitude people can live the life Fergie lives. The Direct address towards the audience is very effective in this video as Fergie tries to convey her fans that nothing is impossible.

The things that I like the most is

  • Fergie attitude and the way she lures the audience to listen her and how successful she is.

  • Mise-en- scene is the best! As these is the main element which symbolises the luxuries in the vedio.

How Famous was the video

  • Ferige's Glamorous was debuted on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 at number 98 in January 2007.

  • The song was also debuted at 56th in the UK singles chart and peaked at 6th for top 10.

Updates on evaluation

Myself and Brogan are currently giving up our lunchtimes to improve our evaluation as it is not up to our usual standards and there is a lot of room for improvements. Jamuna is not participating however we feel this is something worth doing to improve our marks. We have edited some clips that we felt were unnecessary and have recorded some more voiceovers. We will work on this further after we come back from the summer holidays with clips from the film and preliminary task.

Most famous for: Creating R&B music video for example Jay Z Empire State of Mind

Jay Z Empire State of mind -Released in 2009

R Kelly I believe i can fly- Released in 1996

Hype Williams creation of high quality of music videos is what I adore the most as it explores more than one ideas. For Example Jay Z Empire state of mind music video includes fast beating tunes which is contemporary and expressive. The use of fast fading pictures in the beginning is in high quality as the music video shares the story of how rich and powerful New York is. The idea of Jay Z becoming superior than buildings and other people shows people like Jay Z are the one who makes New York so popular and attractive.

Director!

For my choice of music video director I have chosen Michael Bay.

Here are two videos' that he has directed previously:

Here are two images of Michael Bay:
Basic information about Michael Bay:
Michael Benjamin Bay was born on the 17th february, 1975. This would make him 36 years old. He is an American film director and also a producer. The films he has famously worked for include Transformers, Armaggedon, Pearl Harbour, Bad Boys and The Rock. Bay started in the film industry when he was just 15. Megan Fox blasted him on the set of Transformers, labelling him 'Hitler'.

Key artists Michael Bay has worked with:
  • Meatloaf
  • Aerosmith
  • Faith Hill
  • Vanilla Ice
  • Tina Turner
  • Lionel Richie
Other work:

Michael Bay was responsible for the advertising side of the launch of Victoria's Secret.
He also advertised the film Transformers, but was blasted for being 'weak' at it.

An account of his lifestyle:

  • Michael Bay dated Playboy centerfold Jaime Bergman.
  • Ranked #47 on Premiere's 2005 Power 50 List. Previously ranked #54 in 2004.
  • Good friends with Ben Affleck.
  • Bay considers himself an old-school director.
  • 'The Rock' is his favourite of the films he has directed.

My personal response to his work:

I admire the way Bay is not afraid to criticise his and other people's work. For example, 'I love it when people get really mean and call you a 'hack'. It's like, don't they see how well these movies are doing? ' this shows how he has his own opinion and is not afraid to defend his work when he feels it is needed.
I like Bay's style as it is incredibly edgy and he works with some of my favourite bands including Aerosmith. He captures the mood of the song, linking it with the artist's expression in a way that not many others can achieve.

Fast Car by Tracy Chapman

The song is a narravtive tale of generational poverty.Narrator tells the story of her hard life- talks about her father being alcoholic and her mother being jobless. Narrator also tells her story of falling to the cycle of poverty

Fact about the song
-Tracy Chapman received a ground-breaking seven nominations at the 31st Grammy awards.
-In 1989, the album was rated number 10 on Rolling stone magazine's list of the 100 greatest Albums of the 80's
-In 2003, the album was ranked number 261 on the Rolling stone's list of the greatest Albums of all time.

Fast Car is all the time my favourite song which have the most beautiful lyrics.

Bon Jovi - Always

The song 'Always' by Bon Jovi was made in 1994 and is one of my all-time favourite songs and videos. This is because it has a narrative of which draws the viewer into not only listening to the story-like lyrics but watching it become visually respresented as well. It uses tense for effect by flicking from present (a similar-looking version of Jon Bon Jovi holding a photograph of his girlfriend) to past (him actually taking that picture) then back to the present again. Another effective element of the video is when he uses a camera to film him cheating on his girlfriend, which is interesting as it reflects the camera from the previous scene filming the girl he really loves, and the consequences of his actions once he loses her trust. Also, the way the video is ironic is interesting as he reacts terribly when he sees the painting, which is contradictory of how he has done exactly the same thing. Finally, the start and end of the video are similar in the ways that they show him holding the picture, and also they let the viewer see the outside world, at the start a happy place with people playing and colourful flags hanging, at the end a place of destruction and fire, matching his life at the beginning and end of their relationship.

where we're at!!

ok so we've completely finished the editing process(!) and decided to completely changed our sound as nobody was completely happy with it. we've now been inspired by the music in a film called Dead Silence, which suits the theme of a little girl, but has a very dark twist which is perfect for our thriller opening. we have answered a couple of questions for the evaluation, and are all in contact about a variety of ways we can construct the evaluation and are thinking of coming in to sixth form next wednesday to make a start on this!

Friday, 8 April 2011

update!

we've almost finished editing! now spending lunchtime planning our evaluation! :)

Little bit changes are made!

Hello!
We have made some changes in our thriller opening. To make it more suspenseful we have decided to add some dialogues.
The reason we have decided to use dialogues is because it makes the audience read Dad's thoughts and feelings. So lets hope! it is going to work well.
Talking about our opening thriller we have finished trimming and cutting the clips and now we are working towards editing clips and adding some music :)

The Vanishing!

Setting of the opening scene is in middle of nowhere. The idea of nowhere clearly shows by the long shot of trees, pond and country side location. Set up of location reveals the character is isolated person. A character is dressed in grey cardigan and loose trousers who is about mid 40 with short brown hair.. Grey cardigan connotes evil side of the character as later on the film we as the audience know he is a happily married man with beautiful wife and adorable daughter age 13. The conflicts shown in the opening scene is a man and his creation of poisonous drugs. The close up shot of small brown bottle shows the drug plays crucial role in the film.Throughout the opening scene of 'The Vanishing' the world is shown happy which makes the audience secure and calm but some how the tone of the sound in the opening explores the world is dangerous.

Locations for Filming

Our filming took place in Moreton Hall, we filmed in Brogan's Mum's bedroom for the 'Dad' scene, her hallway for the 'Mirror' scene and in Moreton Hall's forest for the 'Kiss' Scene'.
For 'Little Vicky's' scene we used my dad's house to film.

Post-Production

We are now at the Editing process of our thriller opening.
The video is uploaded and we have cut various shots down to the appropriate size.
For the flashbacks we have used LightRays, an effect that makes the clips seem dream-like with white borders to connotate the innocence of the child in the scene. We decided to put close-ups of both the father's and 'Little Vicky's' eye to get the message across that he is always watching her and she has been aware of this from a young age.
We have decided to make various background music but that is next on our list of things to do :)
Some scenes we have thought it best to keep naturalistic sounds to offer realism to the viewer, i.e. when the dad is watching television and waiting for his daughter to come home.
We have kept on track! :)

Date!

We have officially set a date for our first day shooting!

Inspiration for 'Dad'

We were inspired by this character played by Stanley Tucci in the film 'The Lovely Bones'. He matches our interpretations of what we envision the Dad to be like in our opening.
The appearance of this particular character is similar to what we imagined our character to be. His personality also matches i.e; friendly to neighbours but has an underlying sinister side.
Posted by Megan Brogan and Jamuna.

Evaluation of 'Jumping Jack'

Positives:
We used over-the-shoulder shots to create a view from a particular characters' perspective. We also used close-up shots of Jack to show his initial reaction (shock) and emotions because of this. We used different non-diegetic sounds to exaggerate certain situations and highlight an alien-like atmosphere. These added-on sounds also make the clip more suspenseful (ticking clock) and also amusing (cartoon-style noises).

To Improve:
Extending length of time for shots so there is more time for post-production. Some clips i.e when Jam Joe laughs at the end, the music prevents the viewer being able to hear the full extent due to lack of timing.
Certain clips were split and because of our lack of understanding of iMovie, we were unsure of how to undo the process.

Thriller opening of previous student

Infatuation
  1. The use of music is very suspenseful which is there to build up tension.
  2. Camera shots are used very effectively to make the audience want to watch more....The close up shot of gun is an good example!
  3. The only problem I found was letting the audience know who the killer was....I think there was too much detail on killer.

Changes

We decided to change our opening storyline as we felt our original was more like a short film than an opening. It gave too much away so we changed the idea to "Daddy's Little Girl" which we are now happy with. The storyline involves a dad that is obsessed with keeping his daughter young so that she's his little girl forever.

Analysis Of Previous Student Work

Smile.

Positives:
1. The factual information about smiling at the beginning of the clip.
2. The narrative is different because the voiceover sounds 'creepy'

Negatives:
1. Sound levels are low which makes speech sometimes unclear.
2. The picture at the end of the clip is also unclear, which confuses the viewer.
